The Youth Health and Social Reforms (YOHESOR) proudly celebrates a remarkable group of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who successfully completed The Value Project (TVP) and passed out of the National Youth Service Corps on Thursday, 9 July.
During their service year, these corps members served as Peer Trainers, dedicating their time and skills to equipping secondary school students with values that promote integrity, responsible citizenship, ethical leadership, and positive behavioural change. Their commitment reflects YOHESOR’s vision of raising a generation of young Nigerians who are guided by character, accountability, and service.
Transforming Young Lives Through Values Education
The Value Project is more than a training programme it is a movement aimed at shaping attitudes and behaviours through practical values-based education. Working closely with partner schools, the Peer Trainers engaged students in interactive learning sessions that encouraged them to make positive choices both in school and in their communities.
One of the programme’s most impactful activities was the Weekly Commitment Challenge, where students pledged to give up one negative behaviour and reported back on their progress during the following session. This simple but effective exercise encouraged self-reflection, personal responsibility, and accountability.
The project addressed issues such as:
- Littering and environmental responsibility.
- Examination malpractice, including the misconception that helping a friend during an examination is acceptable.
- Honesty and the importance of telling the truth.
- Respect for rules and encouraging parents and guardians to obey traffic regulations.
- Integrity as a daily lifestyle rather than just a lesson.
As the weeks progressed, the Peer Trainers observed encouraging changes in the students’ attitudes, confidence, and understanding of responsible behaviour. Their enthusiasm, thoughtful questions, and active participation demonstrated the positive impact of the programme.
Creating Lasting Memories and Inspiring Positive Change
Beyond classroom teaching, The Value Project fostered meaningful relationships between the Peer Trainers and the students. The welcoming support of the school management, particularly the Principal and Vice Principal, contributed significantly to the programme’s success.
One memorable feature of the sessions was an engaging call-and-response integrity chant, designed to reinforce key lessons in a fun and memorable way. The chant quickly became a favourite among the students, often attracting other learners to gather outside the classroom to listen and participate.
These moments reflect the strength of values-based education when delivered in an engaging, practical, and relatable manner. Although the programme was limited to one school due to manpower constraints, its impact on the participating students was both visible and inspiring.
A New Generation of Value Ambassadors
As these dedicated corps members conclude their NYSC journey, they leave behind more than certificates—they leave behind a legacy of positive influence, mentorship, and service. Through their commitment, they have demonstrated that true leadership begins with character and that lasting societal transformation starts with investing in young people.
